Pretty Table Designs

Easter is right around the corner, and I have found some lovely inspiration for my table.

I love tulips. The combination of tulips and Easter eggs are so cute.  These are from Your Home-Based Mom.

This natural cloche with a beautiful cross expresses the true reason for Easter, which is not bunnies and chocolate. It is from Dining Delight.

This simple arrangement uses Peeps and flowers. That looks easy enough for even a flower novice. This idea is from Bellalimento.

Not everyone likes bunnies. This place setting from Better Homes and Gardens uses birds and gingham.

Free Shutterfly book 3/25

Check your email. Shutterfly sent out some emails that expire 3/25 at 11:59 PST for a free 8×8 book, or $29.99 off a larger book. It worked for me, so try the code STORYTIME before you put all that hard work into creating a book. It claims to be email specific, but it is definitely worth a try.

More Complex Easter Food

Easter Bunny Chicken Pot Pie

BunnyPotPie3-1

These are adorable, but they are time-consuming, and on top of that, I doubt my child would eat them. If I am going to all that effort, I want something I know everyone will eat. For kids, Chicken Pot Pie is too many things mixed up according to my daughter.

Carrot Chicken Salad

Also falling into the category of things my child won’t eat are these adorable crescent roll carrots filled with chicken salad. I can hear the  ‘Eww! ‘ from here. They would be adorable for an Easter Luncheon, but they require a lot of effort for those that don’t enjoy cooking.

Spring Bucket List

082010dogwood1_t607

Spring is all about being outside and enjoying the extra hour of sunshine. You don’t have to go anywhere to do that, but you do have to get out of the house.

wide_shot_patio_sm_t588

Eat outside on a patio. This is even better if your patio has a playground nearby. Chick-fil-A has the nicest, cleanest playgrounds around.

Fountains and Playgrounds4, World's Fair Park, Knoxville, June 2011-2

Go to the park. On the pretty days of Spring make a point to actually go to a park at least once a week. Let the kids run around while you soak up some sun.

April Showers Bring May Flowers, so  grab an umbrella and play in the rain. Grab your camera and take pictures of it. We actually have one of those fun umbrellas with faces on it, so I like to use that one for pictures. Click on the picture to purchase that exact umbrella.

890954_t607

Go for a walk or park a few spaces further out. Most of us have put on a few pounds over the cold and dreary Winter. Spring is a good time to put a few extra steps in your routine.

101226258

Plant flowers. Kids love this, and they really do perk things up around your home. Vintage teacups make adorable planters.

St. Patrick Decor

Most years I don’t even decorate or so anything for St. Patrick’s Day. It is shoved between Valentine’s Day and Easter, and 99% of the time we are on Spring Break from school. Easter is so much more important in our house that we often overlook March 17th as just another day of the week. This year we have extra time between the two holidays, so my green is coming out. And this Irish girl might even do a fun craft or two to get in the spirit.

One thing I usually do is buy a Shamrock plant. Last year I found them cheap at Trader Joe’s, so if you have one of those nearby you might want to pick one up. You can usually find one at your local grocery store during this time of year, but they weren’t nearly as inexpensive as Trader Joe’s. The technical name is the Oxalis plant. I love this picture from Better Homes and Gardens. I used mine on as a table decoration, but they are fun put all over the place. Barbara Pleasant has this page about the care of your plants.

I really like this wreath from Etsy. It is a Boxwood wreath, which I usually consider a Christmas thing, but it is stunning for Spring also.

Delusions of Resolutions

DSC_0210

So it is January 1st once again. I have all these delusions of grandeur and resolutions. I want to get healthy. I want to get closer to God. I want to get organized. I want to get my house cleaned. I want to catch up on my scrapbooking. I want to cook new things. I want to travel. You know, all the typical ones. There is nothing wrong with any of those resolutions, but I’ve made them all before. While January is a time of new pages and new choices, it might not be the best time to try to make changes.

Diet and health are difficult because it is cold. It is hard to exercise when it is freezing outside. Yes, it is always hard to motivate yourself to exercise, but a warm bed and twenty degrees aren’t a good combination. As for dieting, my house still has tons of Christmas goodies around. I’ve tried to rid the house of most of them, but when kids are home they want junk. Other things are hard because moms have kids at home until at least the 6th of January.  Excuses, excuses.

In 2014, I am going to make one month goals. Surely I can stick with something a month. If it doesn’t work in January, there is always February – and it is an even shorter month! My January goal is to incorporate more vegetables in our diet. That might require getting healthy and cooking new things. Let me know if you have any favorite vegetable recipes that kids and husbands will tolerate.

As for scrapbooking, 5th grade is the end of elementary school. I am going to have to get some pictures together for the school video, so I might as well print those out while I am gathering.  Surely I can just commit to one day a month or heck one whole week to do 2013 – start with yesterday and go back. That is much less overwhelming than trying to do 2003.

Do you still make resolutions? Are the helpful or hurtful for your self-esteem?

This year I will start with a day. Today I will try and get in my 10,000 steps on my Fitbit. I will try and not eat anything horrible and delicious – vegetable soup anyone? I will try and do a devotion. I will get one room cleaned, the bathroom downstairs is really small. And most importantly, I will spend the day with my family and not beating up on myself for what I don’t accomplish today.

Why? Thanksgiving Funnies.

As I searched for nice Thanksgiving items, I ran across many items that made me say WHY?

This is an inflatable turkey. They suggest you can use it on your table display until the real one is ready. Um, ok.

Thanksgiving Stuff

My crafty side is showing, and I am getting excited about Thanksgiving. We aren’t hosting, so it makes it a tiny bit harder to get excited. I found a few things on Pinterest that got me excited.

First I like this adorable headband from Kelli Murray. We have a Thanksgiving lunch at school, so this is subtle, but fun. I am sure it is a bit more complicated than it looks, it always is, but I want one in my size. Link here.

Elf On The Shelf Christmas Camp

71uz+99EQsL._SL1500_

He looks so cute and innocent. Are you tired of moving your Elf On The Shelf? Are you terrified your kids are going to find him in the box in January ready to go spend 11 months in the attic like all the rest of your Christmas decorations? Are you just ready to be done with it? Why don’t you mail your Elf to Christmas Camp? I will happily take your elf to my house and find a new use for him or her and let you gracefully off the hook. I can send a picture of your elf with all the other elves having all this fun and going to all the parties you have had to plan during the most stressful time of the year. Great way to explain to the kids that your elf has had to do too much work and needs a permanent vacation.

This is only slightly tounge-in-cheek. I am so glad I never bought an elf. I find their antics exhausting. The original point was to move him around the house and keep your kids behaving. Of course, as usual, some one had to take it to the EXTREME and with Facebook and Pinterest, post pictures and make everyone else feel horrible.  I don’t understand how, at the busiest possible time of the year, you are expected to remember, after bedtime when you are exhausted and have much better things to do, to throw a party or plan an activity for your elf. His behavior is pretty horrible, and if your kids did the kind of things you let the elf get away with, they would be on Santa’s Naughty List.

Pack him up, mail him off, explain it to the kids and seriously I will send a picture or two of your elf at camp and be done with it.

Tea Party Treasure

We sold our house, they had these adorable tiny plastic forks at the closing. I have to admit I put one in my purse to take to my daughter. Since then, I have seen the forks at Kroger. Made by Mozaik, and are the prefect item for birthday parties, tea parties and kids that like anything cute and little.

This appetizer set makes its own gift for little girls. Give your princess an easy picnic set that isn’t a big deal if it gets lost or used for real food. Be the cool aunt or fun friends with this perfect party set.

Green your toys

Christmas is coming, and if someone on your list is against all things commercial and demands no mass-marketed gifts, consider Green Toys. Green Toys Inc. makes a line of classic children’s toys constructed from recycled plastic and other environmentally friendly materials. This helps reduce fossil fuel use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improving the overall health and happiness of the planet. It is worth checking out.

Crockpot Pork Tacos

My new favorite easy dinner is a family crockpot favorite.  I hope your family will enjoy it as much as mine does.

Crockpot Pork Tacos

Pork Roast (I get the roast-flavored pork roast from Hormel)

1 medium jar salsa to your spice level

Place roast in the crockpot and cover in salsa. Let simmer 4-6 hours. When it is ready it will fork-shred. Serve with corn or flour tortillas, beans, rice and anything else you like to add to tacos.

White Chicken Chili

It is that wonderful time of year when you can throw dinner in the crockpot and let it simmer all day. One of my favorite meals is White Chicken Chili. It is my go-to meal when people are sick or have a baby.

CROCK POT WHITE CHICKEN  CHILI
1 pound cooked, chopped, skin-less boneless  chicken breasts
1 48-oz can  Great Northern Beans
1 16-ounce  jar salsa (choose your spice level)
8 ounces  shredded pepper jack cheese
½ cup light  chicken broth
2 t.  cumin
Put  ingredients in a crock pot and cook for 4 hours.  Serve with cornbread.

Berry, Sprite Dump Cake Review

So if you spend any time on Pinterest, you have seen the three ingredient cake. You take a berry or fruit, Sprite and a cake mix and next thing you know you have a delicious dessert. I made this for friends the other night.

My first piece of advice is that you shouldn’t try a new recipe on guests unless you are an excellent cook.

Secondly, this is a cobbler not a crisp. If you don’t know the difference, you can find that here. I am a bigger fan of crisps.

Lastly, I think it might need a sprite and a half. It seemed a little dry.

I made it with mixed berries and a yellow cake mix. It tasted fine, but I won’t make it again because I have better recipes. I had to try after seeing it all over Pinterest all summer.  Find the recipe here.

Halloween Movies Part II

Kids like to get scared, but not too scared. Here are a few movies that we have enjoyed or might try and watch this year. Disclaimer: You know your child, their ability to handle fear and your family belief system. Trust your own judgement. One family lets their kids watch The Goonies and another family will freak out that it has a few bad words in the movie. These movies are aimed at families with older kids, tweens and young teens.

Candy Alternatives For Classrooms

Unlike most people, I think if you don’t want your kids to get candy, don’t take them trick-or-treating. With that said, the classroom doesn’t always want or need anymore candy.  It is hard for me to come up with good alternatives, because a lot of the other “Made in China” junk gets tossed at our house. Here are a few ideas that might work in your mad scramble to send it treats for Thursday.

Finger Flashlights are a great little treat for classrooms. I ordered them off Amazon, but I have seen them in a 4-pack at Dollar Tree.

Don’t Do It! Elf On The Shelf Birthday

product-lp

Hey, if this many people will buy an Elf On The Shelf, we should find a way to use the elf at other times of the year. Introducing Elf On The Shelf Birthday.

Straight from their site:

In Santa’s Christmas village at the North Pole, the scout elves have their own special way of celebrating birthdays—a tradition that goes back many generations. Now, at the request of children around the world, Santa has given special permission for his elves to share that tradition with the families who love them.

The Elf on the Shelf®: A Birthday Tradition tells the little-known story of how Santa’s finest helpers celebrate birthdays at the North Pole—and how you can invite your elf to share that tradition with YOU! Each kit includes special instructions for families on how to invite their scout elf for a birthday visit, and a festive birthday outfit for your elf to slip into before your big day!

“Santa loves birthdays with all their tradition. I know he would give me exclusive permission— to come to your wing-ding, your hullabaloo. He probably wishes that he could come, too.”

Now, I love a good elf as much as the next person, but do you really want to add more drama to your child’s birthday week? Isn’t planning a party and doing all the other Pinterest ideas enough? My guess is no, some of you really are crazy. For those of you – enjoy!

Game Plan: Christmas

il_570xN.200597171

No, it isn’t beginning to look a lot like Christmas. It is barely Fall, but Christmas is right around the corner. You could just buy that sign from Etsy and be done with it. For those of you that love all the holiday spirit, it is a good time to start planning a bit. Here is a quick list to help decide a few things that will make your life easier.

1. Do you have older kids? Start asking them what they want and planning your budget. If a large gift is on their list consider asking other family members to all go in together to purchase it or lower your child’s expectations.

2. Think about what traditions you like doing every year. No point waiting until the last moment to buy play tickets if they are on sale now. And, if no one enjoys going to the neighborhood party, then scratch it off your list.

3. Think about your Christmas cards. Do you have a photo yet? Should you schedule a session with a photographer? How many cards do you need? I love sending and receiving holiday cards, but do I have the money to send them this year? If you are ready-to-go, you can take advantage of quick deals like this one last year from Cardstore.com. In November they ran specials where you could select most any photo card for $.19 including them mailing it for you. Yes, for less than the stamp they created and mailed out your beautiful photo card.

4. Pick dates for parties now. Decide if you even want to throw a party, and email out save the dates to the people that need to be there.

5. BUDGET. I saw that Kmart or Wal-Mart is already advertising their layaway. It is a better idea to put in on layaway now instead of paying for it in January and February on your credit cards.

6. Find that thing you struggle with every year. For one of my friends it is matching Christmas PJs. We found some cheap online this year because normally she is over-paying at the last minute on ebay. For others it might be an ornament or other annual gift. Get going on your photo books and handmade items. They are precious and sweet, but they don’t have to drive you nuts at the last minute.

That’s all for now. What are you thinking about for Christmas?

Fall Decorating

Football Wreath

This cute wreath caught my eye. I have never thought about putting an old football in the center of a wreath.  Turnstyle  Vogue had this cute picture. They didn’t have instructions or a better photo, so you will have to wing it. They found a vintage Oregon Ducks football to add to their Thanksgiving decor. What a great idea!

indian-corn-wreath-title-2

I also really like using Indian Corn for fall decorations. This outdoor wreath from Positively Splendid uses bows, grapevine and Indian Corn. She has great step-by-step instructions with pictures. I always find that extremely helpful. You can find Indian Corn at grocery stores or Walmart.

Your Cozy Home created this Indian Corn Vase for Connecticut Homes and Gardens. I had never heard of this website or magazine until today, but they have a lot of great ideas.

CHandG-Halloween_190

Your Cozy Home  also created this fall centerpiece out of a white pumpkin. I really like the addition of grapevine.

CTH&G Christmas 08-91

Here is another great wreath Your Cozy Home created that incorporates apples. I wouldn’t have thought about writing on real apples to display, but that is a neat inexpensive solution.

nut wreath copy

Your Cozy Home’s last great idea was this nut wreath. I have actually suffered having walnuts, acorns and various things that fall from tress in my yard and never really considered them anything but a pest. I just need to learn to make lemonade from lemons.

It is always nice to give teachers a little treat. Today I didn’t have much time, so I went and bought two jars of salted peanuts and a large bag of candy corn. You mix the two together in a bowl and then scoop back into the peanut jar. I cut a bow for each jar and tied it. The peanuts were approximately $2.50 a jar and the candy corn was $2.50 for the bag. For $7.50 I had an easy gift, happy teachers and leftovers for us at home. I did have my daughter check and make sure no one was allergic to peanuts before I gave it to them.

Here is a link to official instructions if you need a visual.  It doesn’t take ten minutes as suggested. The whole process might take five minutes. It is also a great thing to grab and take to tailgate.

Reflections On The First Week Of School

vintage-fisher-price-little-people-school-house-923_200538639346

Kindergarten with your first or only child is obviously the hardest letting go moment you have as a young parent. Preschool always sent home a cute little note telling us what happened every day, and we picked up at the door, so the I had face-time with the teacher. Once you get to the pick-up line, you don’t even see your teacher every day. It is so hard as a parent. You want to know what your child did, what is coming up tomorrow, do we need to bring anything, did she eat her lunch, does she have friends and all the other aspects of her life away that you have always known.

There are a few things you will have to get used to. The first one is that you will not know what happens in the classroom. You don’t get a little sheet that says “We had a great day!” anymore. You also will be told if they don’t have a great day. No news is good news with teachers.

You will learn more about what is going on with class if you volunteer. I know, you work and you can’t do it. Take a vacation day. Use your lunch. Work late. Do whatever it takes to volunteer as soon as possible. It will make you feel better, and let you connect with the teacher.

You have to let go. You have to realize that the world goes on even if you don’t know every detail. That is hard in our over-protective world. I am ultimately responsible for everything that happens to my child, but I can’t “get in there” at school. It is a hard balance.

Give yourself a few weeks. After the parent meeting, you will feel better about things. Right this second, your teacher is just struggling to survive the first few weeks of school. He/She will have more time for you once things settle down.

Some of you might not have any of these feelings or issues, but for others, it is all normal and it gets better. 😉

Off To Kindergarten

first day of school 001

This is my personal favorite first day picture. If you know my child, that little hand is showing how nervous she is about her first day, and I’m surprised I took a picture with the tears on the verge of falling down my face. While my child is practically in middle school, a whole group of my friends are sending kids off to Kindergarten this year. I was trying to remember back and give them some helpful advice.

My first thought was to buy iron-on labels for your kid’s clothing and put them in anything your child might possible take off at school. After working lost and found last year, put your last name and cell phone number on the labels. Between after-school activities, church, sports, dance, lessons and visits to friend’s homes your cell phone number is your best bet to get your stuff back. Also, if you send in a bathrobe, teddy bear, water bottle or towel for a fun day, label that also.

My second suggestion was to bring your teacher treats. They don’t have to be expensive, but your teacher is trapped in their room year-round. When you come pick up your kiddo for a doctor’s appointment, bring your teacher a fountain drink from a local restaurant. I have brought in Arizona tea cans, 12-packs of Diet Coke, Sonic Slushes, coffee, sweet tea and other favorites over the years. Teachers really appreciate the treat. It is always a positive thing for your teacher to like you. I’m not saying to go over-the-top, but they do appreciate some attention. I also think you can give smaller gifts more often instead of doing nothing and bringing in a large Christmas or end of the year present.

The third thing is to buy nice school supplies. Don’t get the cheap store brand crayons. They don’t color well. The washable markers don’t wash out and cheap scissors are more frustrating than money saving. Crayola crayons and markers, Fiskers or Westcott are both nice scissors, Elmer’s school glue, Black Warrior,  Dixon or Ticonderoga pencils, pink pearl erasers – these are all good brands.

If you can afford to, buy extra school supplies when they are so cheap this time of year. You child will need extra crayons, markers and more glue sticks than you can imagine. Also, other parents don’t send in what they are supposed to or don’t replace things during the course of the year. Teachers end up spending their own money to make sure everyone has what they need. An extra $5 or $10 worth of supplies is very helpful.

Volunteering is the fourth suggestion. You work, you have other kids, you don’t like kids – I don’t care what your excuse is it is critical to go work at least once in your child’s class. Why? Because it is important to your child and because you can’t understand what goes on at school unless you are there. Coming from preschool, I was surprised that the teacher didn’t tell me if my child ate her lunch. I didn’t understand why she was able to get so dirty with supervision and why we hadn’t had any pictures of activities sent home. Whenever I asked the teacher how Monkey was doing, her answer was always fine or great, but never any specifics. Then I worked in the classroom. There was one of her and 21 students. She couldn’t be every where. Between tying shoes, wiping noses, answering questions and keeping the kids under control she was lucky to get through the day with her sanity intact. When parents help it allows her to do crazy things, like go to the bathroom for 3 minutes. It helps you gauge your child’s abilities compared to the other peers. Hey, it is still normal for you 8-year-old to have a melt down when they don’t get their own way. It gives you a chance to meet the other children in your class and know your child’s peers and friends. It also allows you to know your teacher better. This is always a good thing. When your teacher knows your child comes from a family that cares, is involved and is aware of what is going on, they are more likely to forgive a bad day or cut your child some slack if you forget to send in that permission slip. If you work, take an early lunch or use a few hours of vacation. Usually the volunteer shift is an hour or less. Try to get to know other parents in the class and see if there is a way to do a babysit swap or hire a babysitter to volunteer. I am not suggesting you have to volunteer every week or even more than once, but if you can go into their class and see things from their side it will help you the entire school career.

The fifth suggestion is to be on top of things.

Get your children to school on time. It is critical. You are teaching them life-long skills. Be aware that EVERYONE drops their kids off when it is pouring rain or really cold. Those mornings will take longer.

Check their backpack and folder and sign everything the night before. Every morning is crazy. You won’t remember. If your school offers hot lunches go ahead and put some money in their account even if you aren’t planning to have your child eat at school. There will be a day you forget their lunch, the lunch gets left on the bus or something else crazy happens. If you have money on the account your child can eat lunch without any focus or embarrassment. Kids don’t want anything that singles them out at school.

Check the school calendar. Sometimes things like Grandparents Day, Picture Day, Dr. Seuss Week, Spirit Day or other events are listed on the website before your teacher sends them home. Write them on your calendar.  The morning of picture day takes about thirty minutes longer to get ready minimum.

Have supplies on hand for projects. A few sheets of poster board thrown in the back of a closet might keep you from that late-night run to Walmart or Kroger.

Tangle Tamer

SBS-685002

So this morning this story was in my newsfeed. It was about a British import the Tangle Teezer. It is a brush that works on fake hair extensions, color-treated hair and basically every other type out there. Then there was another story here about a child who hated getting her hair brushed until her mom bought her the Tangle Teezer. Not only did she let her mom brush her hair, but she also chose to brush her hair on her own. This sounds ridiculous, but over the years Precious and I have fought more over hair brushing than anything else.

Precious is tender-headed. She says it hurts when the brush is barely touching her head. Unfortunately for her she has hair than tangles easy and needs a lot of brushing.  She is more strong-willed about that one than I am, so that is one battle I am not willing to fight numerous times a day. I fix it in the morning and let her go on her own for the rest of the day.  When I read about the Tangle Teezer, and that it was available at Sally’s I literally rushed right out and bought one today.  It is $12.99 at Sally’s, but also available at Target and Urban Outfitters.

I didn’t hype it up to Precious, I just told her about it at Sally’s and let her pick which one she wanted. She picked purple sparkles. As soon as it was out of the box she brushed her hair and LOVED it. It reminds me of a pet brush, but she took it into all the stores we visited and I actually had to take it away from her. I know, this should not be a big deal, but she is 10-years-old and still is this tender-headed and problematic.  Precious said it pullled the tangles out without hurting, even after she had sprayed her hair with hair spay to keep her braid looking decent. She loves it, and even after one day, her hair hasn’t looked better.

UPDATE: She asked me to brush her hair last night, and brushed the tangles out on her own first thing this morning.

Road Trip: St. Louis

St. Louis is a fairly easy trip for a lot of the country. We went to visit some friends, and went to a baseball game. St. Louis has a lot of fun things to do that are free. The first fun free thing we did was the FREE Anheuser-Busch Brewery tour.  It is a walking tour, so make sure the weather is willing and that you are all physically able to walk outside for about an hour.

Next we ate lunch at a local bottling plant called Fitz’s Soda Bar. (This is no where near the Brewery, but it is near the Zoo.) Fitz’s is located in a really neat community, and surprisingly they have a lot of seating, so the wait for lunch was only 20-30 minutes for a party of seven even though the place was packed. We ate the St. Louis specialty of fried ravioli. Yum! We were stuffed, but I wish we had room for a float. They looked amazing.

Next we went to the St. Louis Zoo. The zoo doesn’t charge admission, and while parking is expensive there are plenty of free spots in the area. They do make up their money by having shows that cost an extra fee and there are things to buy everywhere. Animals include sea lions, hippopotamus, and my favorite the two-month-old baby elephant. Fun for all.

We took in the air show at the Gateway Arch, but that was a special 4th of July show. We wanted to go into the arch, but since there were so many people on the grounds all the tours were sold out. Inside the basement of the arch there is a museum with displays you can check out for free. It costs

Busch

If the Cardinals are in town, take in a ball game. You can check out their schedule here. Like all ball parks, the tickets, food and drinks area all expensive. Busch Stadium will let your bring in a small, soft-side cooler, so consider that if you are bringing kids. You can bring non-alcoholic beverages including water and soda in open cups or in clear plastic bottles no larger than 2 liters. That is always helpful.

We didn’t make it to The City Museum, but I wish we could have gone. The museum is not a stuffy museum, but a wild ride. Literally they have a ten-story slide, a ball pit and about everything else your kids will love. Places like that make me nervous. I like to keep my hands on my kid, but it does look like a ton of fun. This article explains it better than I can.

We were there two full days, and had a blast. This is a fun road trip I recommend.

Wasting Soap

Having kids around, we go through a ton of liquid soap. Bath and Body Works is the worst to let out a ton of soap with each squeeze. I really think the companies do this on purpose to make you buy more soap. It goes beyond just the waste of soap, it also takes more time to clean up because there are all these wads of soap left around the sink.  I saw a tip on Pinterest, my favorite resource, to put a rubber band around the top. The band takes up a lot of the space and limits how much soap, or hand sanitizer, comes out with each push. Obviously, if you need more you can use another squeeze. This is a great solution to any everyday problem.
